Nestled in the scenic mountains of Lhasa, Tibet, the Potala Palace stands as the highest and one of the oldest structures on the planet. Perched at an altitude of 3,767 meters above sea level, the palace is located on the summit of Marpo Ri Hill. As the largest monumental structure in Tibet, the Potala Palace occupies the entire top of the hill along with its slopes, boasting an impressive height of 170 meters.
The Potala is a complex palace that encompasses not only the royal residence but also a massive temple complex. With a total construction area of 360,000 square meters, it served as the main residence of the Dalai Lama for many years. Today, the Potala Palace holds significant religious importance for Buddhists and is well-known to tourists as a fascinating museum.
Construction of the palace complex began in 1645 under the guidance of the Fifth Dalai Lama, and the White Palace was completed three years later. The architecture of the Potala Palace is unique, featuring a stunning combination of numerous buildings, steep staircases, and terraces. To achieve this remarkable design in the 17th century, the best craftsmen from Tibet, China, and Nepal were invited to contribute. Visitors to the palace can explore its spacious pavilions and view the living quarters that once belonged to the Dalai Lama’s mentor and regent. The complex also houses the famous cave of Fa-Wan, an important Buddhist pilgrimage site.
