Most Fortified Buildings in The World
By • Last UpdatedTrosky Castle, Czech Republic
Year of construction: 14th century. Nestled near Prague, the fascinating and enigmatic Trosky Castle has long been regarded as one of the most impregnable fortresses in the Czech Republic. The castle was constructed within the rocky remains of two ancient, extinct volcanoes. The builders didn’t overlook the craters themselves; they incorporated them into the design by placing towers atop the fortress. The dark rocks of the castle create a striking contrast with the deep shades of the surrounding forest, enhancing its formidable appearance.
Although the first official record of the castle dates back to the late 14th century, historians believe it was constructed much earlier. For centuries, the fortress successfully repelled sieges from Swedish conquerors, though it fell into desolation over time. The castle’s most romantic era began in the 19th century when it was owned by Alois. During this period, artists and poets from around the world visited in search of inspiration, drawn by the splendid views from its Maiden Tower.
Interestingly, this tower is the oldest surviving structure; during a devastating fire in 1428, it was the only building to withstand the flames. Despite its allure and unique history, Trosky Castle remains one of the most mysterious and least explored sites. Much of the documentation that could illuminate its past was lost in various fires. Today, the historic site is managed by the Heritage Institute and, despite its impressive age, is well-preserved and open to the public.
