1. African Grey Parrot

The African grey parrot is renowned as the most intelligent and articulate talking parrot in the world. Native to the rainforests of West and Central Africa, these parrots are celebrated for their exceptional understanding and ability to mimic human speech. Similar to other talking birds, African grey parrots often form strong bonds with a single person.

The bond between an owner and an African grey parrot is crucial in shaping its talking ability. By treating these parrots with care during training, their speech skills can improve significantly. They also have a remarkable ability to learn various sounds from their environment, allowing them to mimic different voices to evade predators.

The African grey parrot belongs to the Old World parrot family Psittacidae, and this description focuses on the Congo African grey parrot, while the Timneh parrot is recognized as a separate species.

This medium-sized parrot is predominantly grey, with a black bill, weighing around 400 grams and measuring 33 cm in length, with an average wingspan of 46–52 cm. The Congo subspecies features a lighter grey body, with darker shades on the head and wings, and slightly white-edged feathers. Its tail feathers are bright red. In contrast, the Timneh subspecies is darker grey, has a maroon tail, and exhibits a light pink portion on its beak. Through selective breeding, some Congo African grey parrots may have partial or complete red feathers. Juveniles resemble adults but typically have dark grey to black eyes, while adults possess striking yellow irises around their dark eyes. Adult weights range between 418 and 526 grams.
