5. Indian Ring Parakeet

The Indian ring parakeet is renowned for its exceptional talking ability among parrot species. These birds can learn to recognize and reproduce between 200 and 250 words. However, their capacity to mimic human speech varies among individual parrots and is influenced by the frequency of interaction with their owners.

Indian ring parakeets often attempt to imitate human voices they hear in their environment and can also pick up words from music. Their remarkable ability to mimic human speech is truly exceptional.

The rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), commonly known as the ring-necked parakeet, is a sociable tropical bird found across a vast range in Afro-Asia. Adult males display a distinctive red or black neck ring, while females and immature birds either lack these rings or have faint grey markings. Both sexes are primarily green in color and measure about 40 cm (16 inches) in length, including their long tail feathers. Their average wing length is around 15–17.5 cm (5.9–6.9 inches). Known for their loud squawking calls, these birds are herbivorous and do not migrate.

One of the few parrot species to adapt successfully to disturbed habitats, the rose-ringed parakeet has thrived despite urbanization and deforestation. As a popular pet, escaped birds have established feral populations in various cities worldwide. While the species was classified as least concern by the IUCN in 2012 due to its increasing population, its popularity as a pet and conflicts with farmers have led to declines in certain areas of its native range.
