4. Eclectus Parrot

Eclectus parrots, native to the islands of New Guinea, are celebrated for their exceptional clarity of speech and extensive vocabulary. These parrots can accurately imitate most words they hear in their surroundings, often producing high-quality mimicry. Remarkably, some Eclectus parrots are capable of learning and singing entire songs.

Eclectus parrots are adept at mimicking both human speech and various appealing sounds from their environment, often surprising their owners with their accuracy. They are known to repeat words in appropriate contexts and both male and female Eclectus parrots possess charming, melodious voices.

Native to the Solomon Islands, Sumba, New Guinea, and nearby islands, as well as northeastern Australia and the Maluku Islands, the Eclectus parrot is notable for its extreme sexual dimorphism in plumage coloration. Males are primarily bright emerald green, while females showcase striking red and purple/blue feathers.

In his book Parrots of the World, Joseph Forshaw noted that early European ornithologists initially mistook the Eclectus parrot for two distinct species due to this coloration difference. Although large populations of these parrots thrive, some smaller island populations are quite rare and are occasionally viewed as pests for their tendency to eat fruit from trees. Additionally, the vibrant feathers of Eclectus parrots are often utilized by native tribespeople in New Guinea for decorative purposes.
